Just booked croatia for next week, staying around Bibinje and Zadar further up the coast. Its all good wherever you got. Hire a car, its very easy to get around outside the bigger cities

I am hoping to get to Croatia for a few days later this year, and I was thinking of either of these 2 places too and decided that Split looked the better bet. Also, Bilic is from Split so you might bump into him and can share a joint and a chat.

Split is a good city in itself, gets quite busy in summer and a great base for boat trips out to nearby islands.

Dubrovnik is stunningly beautiful, gets absolutely rammed, and there are fewer nearby islands to visit so you’d be sticking more to the city itself. Staying at Cavtat, near Dubrovnik, is also a nice balance of good restaurants etc, boat taxis to Dubrovnik, but less crowded.

I was hoping to bed down in one of them for a few days, doing some sight seeing and find some nice restaurants. Don’t really need much nightlife.

Both are lovely. Dubrovnik is nicer but smaller. You might be able to do them both in 5 days.
